Lantern parade and torch kick off Costa Rica Independence Day festivities

Costa Rica’s Independence Day, celebrated on September 15, is a significant national holiday commemorating the country’s peaceful transition to independence from Spain in 1821. The event is marked by various traditions and festivities, bringing together families, students, and citizens across the nation to honor their heritage.

One of the key highlights of the celebrations is the arrival of the Torch of Independence, which symbolizes the spread of independence across Central America. On Monday, hundreds of children and families gathered at Parque Central in San José to witness this symbolic torch as it made its way to Cartago, Costa Rica’s colonial capital. The torch, having traveled through several Central American countries, arrived just a day before Costa Rica celebrated its 194th year of independence.

Another cherished tradition during the festivities is the desfile de faroles, or lantern parade. Children proudly display hand-made lanterns, showing their creativity and the vibrant colors that reflect the spirit of independence. These lanterns are meant to represent the freedom and enlightenment that independence brought to the region.

The celebrations also include school parades with students in traditional dress, music, and dances, showcasing Costa Rica’s rich cultural heritage. The day is filled with pride and a sense of unity, as citizens come together to reflect on the peaceful history of their country’s independence.

Costa Rica’s Independence Day is not only a celebration of the past but also a reaffirmation of the nation’s values of peace, democracy, and national pride.
