If you’ve passed your motorcycle theory test and can’t find a road-test appointment, you don’t need one this week. Through Friday, Oct. 30, you can show up at Ciudad Vial in San José and take your practical motorcycle exam on the spot. Walk-in testing runs from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day and covers A1, A2 and A3 motorcycle licenses. You don’t need a booked slot or a login for the online scheduling system.
The site can test up to 1,000 people a day. After the first morning on Monday, driver education director Sindy Coto said turnout had stayed within that capacity and people were being tested almost as soon as they arrived, without long lines. Come prepared, because a missing document means you won’t be tested. You must already have passed the theory test. Bring a valid ID in good condition and a medical certificate, known here as a dictamen médico, issued within the last 180 days.
You also need the receipt for the â‚¡5,000 (about $10) test fee, paid at an authorized bank and matching the Class A license you’re applying for. The motorcycle you test on needs current paperwork too, including its paid marchamo and a valid technical inspection card. Two groups can’t use the walk-in option. If you already have a road test booked, keep that appointment. If you failed a practical test in the last 20 business days, the system blocks you from retesting until that waiting period runs out.
There’s a reason not to put this off as a transition period tied to Costa Rica’s new driving test manuals ends Dec. 31. If you passed your theory test before Feb. 27, 2026, and haven’t taken the practical exam by Dec. 31, that pass will only count toward a car license. To get a motorcycle license after that, you’ll have to sit the motorcycle theory test again.
If this week doesn’t work, booked road tests are also running longer hours. Every testing site is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays through December. Ciudad Vial and the busy sites in Pérez Zeledón, San Ramón, Heredia and Guápiles are also testing on Saturdays in October, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. This Saturday, Oct. 31, is the last of those.
Ciudad Vial is on the south side of Parque de la Paz in San José. Like the no-appointment testing day at the National Stadium in June, this week is aimed at people whose work or school hours have made it hard to finish getting licensed.
