23 people injured in bullfights during first day of Palmares fest

During Thursday’s massive horse parade that initiated the Palmares Festival, 122 people needed medical attention, according to data from the Red Cross. That included 23 injuries to festival-goers who entered the bullfighting ring.

In addition, the daily La Nación said police detained or arrested 73 people, mainly for drugs and theft.

La Nación on the injuries and arrests:

According to reports from authorities, the majority of people attended by the Red Cross were injured in falls and fights, and one had been stabbed with a knife. Of those who attended, 16 were taken to the hospital in San Ramón.

Most of these arrests were due to cases of suspected pickpocketing and dispensing of drugs, and one man was arrested after he recorded the private parts of a woman at the tope.

Police told La Nación they were able to recover some of the stolen items. Oddly, they also encountered four people who were found to have an irregular immigration status.

The gigantic Palmares Festival began Thursday and runs through Jan. 26. Earlier this week, we gave you some tips on enjoying the big party. We also warned about getting into a ring with a bull. That’s still good advice for the rest of the festivities.
