Travel Alert: Costa Rica’s Caldera Highway reopens

Transit on Route 27 between Costa Rica’s capital and the Pacific province of Puntarenas reopened under Traffic Police supervision at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, GlobalVía, the company that administers the route reported.

Landslides caused by heavy showers on Wednesday afternoon dropped tons of earth and rock that completely blocked passage at a stretch of road between kilometers 45 and 46.

GlobalVía spokeswoman Mariana Mora Binns said workers and staff from the National Concessions Council removed the debris earlier on Thursday, using a crane to remove loose portions of the slope to avoid more landslides.

The highway remained closed throughout the evening, however, for inspections.

Mora said the company has a monitoring protocol and constantly patrols the 76.8 kilometers of highway.

Travelers between San José and the Central Pacific region also can use an alternate route through Monte del Aguacate, on Route 3.
