Third of Costa Rica’s sextuplets dies from organ failure

Andrés, the fifth sextuplet, has died from multiple organ failure, Costa Rican media reported Monday morning.

At 9 a.m. on Monday, the infant’s lungs, heart and brain stopped functioning, said Patricia Fallas, a neonatal specialist at Hospital México, according to the daily La Nación. Andrés, the smallest of the six at 942 grams, was intubated on May 20.

“We did everything we could to save Andrés’ life,” hospital authorities said, according to a tweet from Noticias Monumental.

The child was the fifth of sextuplets born 13 weeks premature on May 17 in what was the largest recorded pregnancy in Costa Rica’s history.

Gabriel, Tomás and Valentina, the three surviving infants, all remain in serious condition, according to the news site CRHoy.com.

Diego and Emma, two more of the six, died on May 20 and May 22, respectively, from complications related to their premature birth.
