United adds early flight from Costa Rica capital to Houston

Over the weekend United Airlines inaugurated a new weekly nonstop flight from San José, Costa Rica, to George Bush International Airport in Houston, Texas, in the United States.

It is the carrier’s fifth weekly flight on the route and operates four days a week, from Friday to Monday, departing at 1:45 a.m.

“This additional flight allows us to fill the strong demand from travelers looking to get to Houston earlier, in order to make connections towards other U.S. destinations as well as to Europe and Asia. Adding this flight reinforces United’s current position as the airline offering the largest number of seats from Costa Rica to the United States,” said the company’s executive director for Central America, Salvador Marrero.

Costa Rican Tourism Minister Wilhelm von Breymann said United’s decision is a compelling example of the country’s positioning as a highly competitive and profitable destination for the airlines.

“The proven success of this carrier has motivated them to increase the frequency of flights from Houston, and this also increases our connections with the U.S., our main source of tourists,”  Von Breymann said.

Last Thursday, Southwest Airlines announced that pending permission they would start offering a service to San José from Houston as early as October 2015.
