Costa Ricans psyched for this weekend’s Philharmonic Orchestra tribute to Pink Floyd

Costa Rica can’t get enough Pink Floyd. A couple weeks ago tickets went on sale for a tribute to the legendary psychedelic group by the country’s Philharmonic Orchestra. The three performances — set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday night at the Melico Salazar Theater in San José — sold out quickly.

So organizers added a Saturday matinee. Then that sold out. Now a fifth date has been added (and tickets remain available) for a Sunday matinee.

Tickets for the remaining show range from $40 to $70, and can be purchased at www.specialticket.net. The Sunday performance begins at 2 p.m. at the Melico Salazar Theater.

The Philharmonic Orchestra has a tendency  to mix in contemporary performances alongside its more typical classical fare. In the past, the orchestra has done tributes to Michael Jackson and the music of the 80s. But the Pink Floyd appreciation seems to have really struck a chord with Costa Rican audiences.

The group’s kaleidoscopic prog rock is well-suited for a large orchestra. The show will include the band’s biggest hits including “Another Brick in the Wall Part II,” “Comfortably Numb,” “Hey You” and “Money.”

The orchestra also made a cool ad campaign to promote the performances. In the 30-second long clips, a “shaky” cam catches glimpses of a flying pig floating through San José. Any Pink Floyd fan will recognize the flying pig from the album cover of the seminal release “Animals.”

One video shows the pig flying by the Banco Nacional headquarters:

Another sees the pig soaring by the theater where the concerts will take place:

Here’s hoping that’s a sign we’ll hear at least a couple tracks from “Animals” as well — Pink Floyd’s best album (edging out “Wish You Were Here,” just for those glorious solos on “Dogs,” which would sound fantastic in the hands of an orchestra).
