Costa Rica registers increase in seismic activity this week

The Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) on Thursday morning reported a magnitude-4.0 tremor off the Caribbean coast in Limón.

The earthquake occurred at 9:01 a.m., with an epicenter located 13 kilometers northeast of Puerto Vargas. It was felt strong in communities such as Cocles and Manzanillo, though no damage or injuries were reported.

The University of Costa Rica’s National Seismological Network reported the quake as a magnitude-4.1.

Overall, OVSICORI recorded 10 tremors this week ranging from 2.6 to 4.6 in magnitude.

The highest magnitude earthquake hit Wednesday night on the Nicoya Peninsula in the northwestern province of Guanacaste, with a 4.6-magnitude. Early that day a 3.4-magnitude tremor was recorded near Parrita in the southern Pacific.
