New York Times selects Costa Rica’s Nosara for list of places to visit

The New York Times recognized Nosara, located in Costa Rica’s northwestern province of Guanacaste, as one of the top 45 places to visit in the year 2012, securing the 41st spot on their prestigious list. Known for its sandy beaches, warm jade-green waters, and gentle rolling waves, Nosara offers a perfect environment for both beginner and seasoned surfers. The town’s remote jungle setting on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast adds to its allure, creating a serene backdrop for those looking to connect with nature while enjoying the surf.

Nosara’s Guiones Beach, in particular, is highlighted as a prime spot for quality hiking, providing visitors with scenic trails that wind through the lush, tropical landscape. In addition to its natural beauty, Guiones Beach is also home to a turtle refuge, offering a unique opportunity to observe and support local wildlife conservation efforts. The beach’s consistent waves make it a favorite among surfers, attracting enthusiasts from around the world.

One of the key factors that set Nosara apart as a top surf destination is the abundance of surf schools that have sprung up throughout the town. These schools cater to all skill levels, making it an ideal place for surfing novices to learn the ropes while also providing more experienced surfers with opportunities to refine their skills. The New York Times referred to Nosara as a haven for “surfing geeks,” acknowledging the town’s growing reputation within the global surf community.

While Nosara shines as a standout destination in Costa Rica, the list also recognized Panama, the only other Central American country to make the cut, placing it at number one. Panama’s booming economy, impressive skyline, and the iconic Panama Canal were highlighted as key attractions that contributed to its top ranking.

Nosara’s inclusion on this list is a testament to its rising popularity as a travel destination, offering visitors a blend of natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and a vibrant surf culture that continues to draw attention from around the world.
