Nicaragua opposition journalist Carlos Fernando Chamorrro released from hospital following fatal weekend traffic accident

MANAGUA, Nicaragua – Esteemed Nicaraguan journalist Carlos Fernando Chamorro, son of former President Violeta Barrios de Chamorro (1990-1997), was injured in a traffic accident over the weekend that killed one person and critically injured another, Chamorro’s online news magazine Confidencial reported on Monday.

The accident occurred on Saturday night, but was not reported by the media until Monday.

According to Confidencial, Chamorro was traveling in a vehicle driven by his chauffeur in the eastern department of Chontales when it was struck by another vehicle traveling at a high speed and in the wrong lane.

Chamorro underwent surgery on Sunday for fractures in his left hand and was released. His driver, Eddy Osorio, remains hospitalized in serious condition. The driver of the second vehicle was killed instantly, Confidencial reported.

“Thanks to the doctors at Boaco Hospital who provided us care following a horrible accident. We are recovering,” Chamorro tweeted.

In the 1980s, Chamorro headed the Sandinista newspaper Barricada before later splitting over ideological and political differences with party leadership. Chamorro currently is director of Confidencial and the television programs “Esta Semana” and “Esta Noche,” which provide investigative reports and much-needed political criticism of the Sandinista government of Daniel Ortega.

Chamorro told The Tico Times he is recovering at home.
