Region’s presidents to mark Esquipulas II anniversary

MANAGUA – Central America’s foreign ministers on Tuesday agreed on a common agenda for a presidents summit to be held in Nicaragua on Wednesday.

Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Samuel Santos said discussions will focus on topics such as implementation of security strategies in the region, projects for disaster risk management, climate change and regional integration. He added that the issues are “pillars” in the agenda of the Central American Integration System.

The region’s presidents also will meet with Secretary General of the Organization of American States José Miguel Insulza to analyze the challenges of the drug war – paradoxically marking the celebration of 25th anniversary of the signing of regional peace agreements in 1987 to end bloody conflicts, and agreement known as Esquipulas II.

The Esquipulas Peace Agreement emerged from an initiative in the mid 1980s to solve the military conflicts that plagued Central America. It bears the name of an eastern Guatemalan city in the coastal department of Chiquimula, where the first meeting was held.
