Authorities hoping to prevent the rain from washing out Nicaragua border road

Engineers from the Public Works and Transport Ministry (MOPT) and the National Roadway Council (CONAVI) are preparing a contingency plan to prevent the rains from washing out Route 1856, a road along Río San Juan in the border with Nicaragua.

Minister Luis Llach said that they will take into account recommendations from other entities such as the National Structural Materials and Models Laboratory (LANAMME, at the University of Costa Rica) and the Costa Rican Engineers’ Association.

Authorities from both institutions realize the need for intervention in order to mitigate the damage that could be caused in several sections of the route during the rainy season. This would include changing the use of ballast materials in the areas more likely to be affected.

CONAVI also stated that this week they will be paying the debts with private companies who worked in the border road. The debt amount is close to ₡10 billion (some $19.6 million) as reported by the Finance Department and could be paid Wednesday.
