4 Dead in Grenade Blast in El Salvador

SAN SALVADOR – Four people, including  a young boy, were killed and a newborn infant was injured when a grenade accidentally went off in a rural area in eastern El Salvador, according to police.

The incident occurred Jan. 26 when José Douglas Antonio García, 19, found the grenade near his home in a remote corner of the Concepcion de Oriente municipality.

According to police reports, García removed the safety catch on the device, which caused the explosion.

Killed along with García were his 11-year-old brother and two other relatives, police said.

The 1-year-old daughter of José Douglas was also injured when hit by shrapnel.
