Violent Criminal Brought to Justice

Dear Nica Times:

On March 12, after a trial by jury, Miguel Angel Acevedo Castillo, a.k.a. “el pajarraco” was, by unanimous decision, found guilty of violently robbing me and my wife, Gillian Lythgoe, in downtown Granada Nov. 18, 2006. (NT, Dec. 1, 2006). Today,March 19, he was sentenced to 10 years in jail.

After Gillian and I picked Acevedo out of a police line-up, officers told us that he had been identified by other people he had attacked, but that they were unable to bring a prosecution, or be witnesses in a trial, because many of the victims were tourists who had only been in Nicaragua for a short amount of time.

Gillian and I, however, were able to pursue the case because we are residents in Granada. We retained a lawyer, César Picado, who with state prosecutor Fernando Salinas and investigative police officer Coralia Del Carmen Domínguez, was able to obtain a conviction.
