Nicaragua Says Goodbye to Boxing Legend Turned Mayor

Nicaragua and the boxing world woke up July 1 to the shocking news that boxing legend and Mayor of Managua Alexis Argüello, 58, had died. Medical reports found Argüello died from a bullet wound to the heart, allegedly self-inflicted.

However, two of Argüello’s adult children suspect foul play and have requested their father’s body be exhumed for an independent autopsy.

Known in the ring as “The Explosive Thin Man,” Argüello, a three-time world boxing champ who sought redemption in politics after falling into drug addiction in the 1980s-90s, is remembered as Nicaragua’s greatest sports figure of all time.
