Caribbean music in the capital

Caribbean band MasterKey performed at Theater at Noon this Tuesday at the National Theater.  The five-man vocal group presented 10 different songs as part of the recital “Costa Rican Caribbean Musical Heritage.”

Unaccompanied by instruments, the group used a combination of vocals and beat box, singing everything from calypso classics like “Banana” to new twists on traditional songs like “Amazing Grace.”

MasterKey was formed in 1997, when the quintet Marcos and Winstn Milliner, Edson McField, Dabbin Cole and David Tucker met at the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Desemparados.

Starting with gospel music, the group began to gain notoriety for a cappella skills, and have performed for past Costa Rican presidents as well as the king of Spain.

This performance at Theater at Noon is the first of two Afro-Costa Rican themed concerts. Next Tuesday, Carlos Saavedra will perform “Caribbean Concert: Calypso Experience.”
