This One Will Have You Cheering for Love

The Little Theatre Group’s upcoming production of this romantic comedy will have you laughing, crying and cheering for love as “Same Time Next Year” by Bernard Slade explores not just the everevolving relationship, but also the evolving lives of its two characters, both married to other people.

Starting in 1951, after a chance meeting at a California hotel and a night of passion, George, a quick-witted and neurotic East Coast CPA, promises Doris, a naïve and inexperienced West Coast housewife, to meet again the following year, and the year after that and the year after that… and so on for 25 years. The couple grows and changes as the years roll by but never loses the awe that they have found their true soul-mates.

The play ran four years on Broadway, became a successful motion picture, and remains one of the most widely produced plays in history. Clive Barnes, then of The New York Times, wrote, “It is the funniest comedy about love and adultery to come Broadway’s way in years.”

Veteran actors Lisa DeFuso and Tom Humes star in the show, directed by Susan Hall Liang.

Married to each other in real life, DeFuso and Humes have both acted and directed for the LTG and will be especially remembered for when they played opposite each other in the romantic and chilling “The Mysterious Mr. Love” in 2004, also directed by Liang.

Lisa DeFuso was last seen as the treadmill- loving Priya in “The Good Body.”

Previous LTG adventures include “Ten Little Indians,” “Art,” “Blithe Spirit,” “Any Friend of Percy D’Angelino’s,” “The Cemetery Club,” “Talking With…” and “Trees Die Standing Tall.”

Tom Humes worked as an actor in New York City for 15 years before coming to Costa Rica. At LTG he has appeared in “Talking With…,” “Percy D’Angelino,” “An O’Henry Christmas” and “Trees Die Standing Tall.” He has also directed several productions including “Art,” “Play it Again, Sam” and most recently, “Lettice and Lovage.”

The show is at the Blanche Brown Theater in Escazú, May 12-28. Performances are at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, with 2:30 p.m. matinees on Sundays. (Sunday,May 14, is a Canadian Club fundraiser).

To get to the theater, turn in at the first entrance into Bello Horizonte (above the Los Anonos Bridge going west toward Escazú), and go two blocks. Turn left before the bright yellow K@os Center. Go two and a half blocks. The theater is behind the pink house on the right. Guarded street parking is available.
