Artists Gather to Paint For Two Alajuela Schools

Brushstrokes flew when 25 Costa Rican artists came to the Colinas de Poás tourist center in Alajuela, northwest of San José, Saturday to share artistic visions in a charity fundraiser sponsored by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT).

From 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 25 artists including Karen Clachar, Miguel Casafont, Rodolfo Stanley and Tico Times editorial cartoonist Arcadio Esquivel painted landscapes of their surroundings.

Artists painted with acrylic or watercolor paints, which are suited to the limited time they had to complete their projects.

The paintings will be exhibited and sold at the Colinas de Poás tourist center until Sept. 23.

Participating artists have agreed to donate at least 50% of the proceeds from their sales to the nearby Fraijanes and Poasito elementary schools, said Isabel Vargas, manager of Colinas del Poás. The funds will be used to improve infrastructure and purchase furniture and supplies.

Colinas del Poás is located 11 kilometers from Poás Volcano, northwest of San José.
