Picnic Festival 2026 Opens in Heredia with Sunshine and Live Music

The Picnic Festival opened its 2026 edition yesterday, at the Centro de Eventos Pedregal in Belén de Heredia. Sunny skies and temperatures near 29 degrees Celsius marked the opening day as doors opened at 1 p.m. and live music started across multiple stages.

This ranks as one of the largest outdoor music festivals in Costa Rica. The event spans two Saturdays in San José. The March 14 date pulled in more than 30,000 people to the site. The second and final date takes place on March 21.

Costa Rican artist Shel Dixon performed early in the afternoon as one of the first acts. Tarrus Riley delivered a reggae set. Yandel took the stage around 5 p.m. and led the crowd in singing his hits. Young Miko followed shortly before 7 p.m. and had attendees jumping. Later performances included Ozuna with tracks such as Se preparó, Rels B, and Maná closing the night after 10 p.m. with songs like Oye mi amor, Rayando el sol and Vivir sin aire. The lineup kept energy high from afternoon into the evening.

Attendees moved between the four stages while visiting food areas and brand activations. Urban fashion styles stood out, with many wearing outfits that fit the festival vibe. Mechanical games and photo spots added options between sets. Tourists and expats in the San José area this weekend can still attend the March 21 date. The festival serves as a key live music gathering near the capital.

Traffic increased on access roads during the first day. Vehicles backed up along the Autopista General Cañas and near Pedregal entrances. The municipal police of Belén ran a special transit and security operation for both March 14 and March 21 dates to manage flow and safety until midnight. Officials recommend public transport options. Buses run from central San José toward Belén, and special train services reach the area near the venue. Drivers face possible delays and should allow extra time for parking.

The Picnic Festival has expanded over the years and now draws crowds from across our country. Those headed to the March 21 date can still find tickets through official sales points. Early arrival helps gets you better viewing spots before main sets begin. The event wraps up with a huge amount of people expected and sets the stage for the closing Saturday.
