British Theater Company To Stage “King Lear”

In what promises to be a theatrical experience not to be missed, San José’s National Theater will present British touring theater company TNT’s most recent musical version of William Shakespeare’s “King Lear” for two performances Sept. 19 and 20.

Founded in 1980 by artistic director Paul Stebbing, TNT is one of the foremost touring companies in England and the world. Its style integrates all disciplines of the performing arts, including live music, and its small troupe is made up of multitalented actors.

The group explores complex texts and serious themes, but because of the highly visual content and unconventional approach, its productions are accessible to audiences of all ages, as well as those who don’t speak English.

Stebbing’s most recent production of a musical version of “King Lear” and interpretations of “Macbeth,” “Hamlet,” “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” and “Romeo and Juliet” demonstrate how Shakespeare can be relevant to modernday audiences. TNT’s productions, which range from Shakespearean plays to contemporary works, have received countless awards, and the company has toured throughout Europe, as well as in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Performances start at 8 p.m. both evenings. Ticket prices range from ¢3,000-18,000 ($5.80-35). For tickets or information, call the National Theater box office at 221-5341 or visit www.teatronacional.go.cr.
