Sand Fest Returns to Playas del Coco

A sand festival is blanketing Playas del Coco for a three-day beach festival kicking off tonight. After the success of its first incarnation last year (TT,March 31, 2006), Sand Fest is returning to the beach community on the northern Pacific coast.

Headlining this year’s event is the selfdeclared “Mexican Power Trio,” a group of three renowned sand sculptors headed by Calixto Molino. Attendees will be able to watch as the artists carve out their masterpieces on the beach.

Live music, theatrical performances and interactive circus and magic shows will also lace the weekend’s festivities, according to a statement from event organizers.

Soccer games and kids’ competitive events, such as sack and three-legged races, will take place throughout the weekend, while beach volleyball and soccer tournaments will be open to all ages.

The festival will have an environmental focus, and marine conservation campaigners from various groups will have stands on-site, offering talks and workshops.

The event is free and open to the public. For more info, call 670-0625 or 362-7811, or e-mail sandfest2007@gmail.com.
