Honduran Migrant Caravan Heads to US Amid Midterm Elections

Dozens of people left northern Honduras yesterday in a caravan bound for the United States, hoping the congressional elections will weaken U.S. President Donald Trump, who has maintained a crackdown on irregular migration. The Hondurans set out on foot from San Pedro Sula, many carrying backpacks or pulling rolling bags, on the same day as the pivotal elections in which Republicans and Democrats are vying for control of Congress.

“Trump is on his way out in these elections. That’s why we’re taking the risk. Here in Honduras, we have nothing left,” Jimena Morazán, 47, who is traveling with five family members, said. In Honduras, 61% of the country’s 11.2 million people live in poverty, and the homicide rate stands at 24 per 100,000 residents, three times the global average, according to official figures.

This is the third caravan of dozens of migrants to leave Honduras since September. Salvadorans, Guatemalans, Nicaraguans and Mexicans joined the previous groups along the route toward the southern U.S. border. Salvadorans also plan to leave the capital, San Salvador, on Wednesday aboard two buses to join the Hondurans at the Guatemala-Mexico border.

“We found out on social media that a caravan was leaving, and I decided to go with my family,” explained Jesús Carías, 30. Accompanied by his wife and three young children, he acknowledged that the journey would be “complicated.” “We’re putting ourselves in God’s hands and will see what they decide over there,” added Carías, who will be making his fourth attempt to enter the United States.

“While they’re going through the election process, we’ll be on our way. We have faith that we’ll arrive while they’re busy with that,” Beverly Medina, 39, who is traveling with her three-year-old daughter, said.

The Trump administration warned Thursday that it would revoke the visas of people organizing these caravans, which are largely coordinated through TikTok and WhatsApp. The U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa said on X that the caravans “have no chance of entering” U.S. territory.

Trump has made combating irregular immigration a central pillar of his domestic policy, conducting raids across the country and enforcing a policy of zero admissions at the southern border. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced last week that it had revoked the immigration status of 2.2 million foreign nationals since January 2025, in addition to restricting work permits.
