Costa Rican food industry seeks expansion in region

Officials from Costa Rica’s Foreign Trade Promotion Office (PROCOMER) this week will sponsor a group of local business owners on commercial trips to Guatemala, Honduras and Belize to offer products from the country’s food industry.

Local producers of honey, spices, pork, tea and other products hope to market their products and expand business throughout the region.

PROCOMER has scheduled some 70 business meetings with potential buyers in the three countries, mainly representatives of major supermarket chains.

Participating companies include Industrias Los Patitos, Agroindustral Cane League, Rajasa, Grupo Porcimás, Manzate and Corporación de Carnes El Rey.

Last year, PROCOMER sponsored a similar trip to Nicaragua and Honduras.

According to PROCOMER, 233 companies from Costa Rica’s food sector sold products to 90 countries, and exports totaled $1.3 billion in 2012.
