Costa Rica Reports Renewed Increase in COVID-19 Cases

COVID-19 has once again become the most widely circulating respiratory virus detected in Costa Rica, as health officials urge residents to take basic precautions amid an increase in cases and hospitalizations. The latest epidemiological surveillance places COVID-19 ahead of rhinovirus and parainfluenza among respiratory viruses currently circulating here.

During epidemiological week 29, covering July 13 through July 19, Costa Rica recorded 126 confirmed COVID-19 cases, up from 94 the previous week. That represents an increase of about 34%. Hospitalizations also climbed, with 29 COVID-19 patients receiving hospital care compared with 18 the previous week, an increase of roughly 56%. Five deaths associated with COVID-19 were reported during the same epidemiological week.

The figures remain far below the levels Costa Rica experienced during the height of the pandemic, and there is currently no national health alert for respiratory illnesses. However, the change in circulation has prompted renewed attention as several respiratory viruses spread simultaneously.

Costa Rica has recorded more than 771,000 cases of respiratory illness so far this year, a broader figure that includes illnesses caused by multiple viruses rather than COVID-19 alone. Children, older adults and people with chronic health conditions remain among those considered most vulnerable to complications from respiratory infections.

Health authorities are recommending many of the familiar measures used to reduce respiratory infections: keeping vaccinations current, washing hands regularly, covering coughs and sneezes and choosing well-ventilated spaces when possible. People experiencing respiratory symptoms are also being encouraged to avoid crowded activities and limit close contact with vulnerable relatives or friends until they recover.

The renewed circulation of COVID-19 comes during Costa Rica’s rainy season, when respiratory illnesses can become more noticeable as people spend more time indoors and several viruses circulate at the same time. For residents and travelers, the latest numbers do not signal a return to pandemic-era restrictions. There have been no announcements of renewed mask mandates, travel requirements or widespread restrictions connected to the current increase.

Instead, the emphasis remains on individual precautions, particularly for people at greater risk of serious illness. Health officials continue to monitor COVID-19 alongside influenza, rhinovirus, parainfluenza and other respiratory illnesses to identify changes in circulation and hospital demand.
