Digital parking meters replace paper tickets in San José on Monday

Starting Monday, motorist will be unable to buy tickets to pay for parking spaces on the streets of the capital.

New digital parking meters were inaugurated by the Municipality of San José on April 29, and will fully replace the use of paper tickets.

Payments can be made using debit or credit cards, or via text messaging from a cellphone.

In order to use the phone system, the municipality created the CPS Parking app, which works on most popular operating systems including Android, BlackBerry, iOS and Symbian.

The cost of parking is ₡255 ($ 0.51) for half an hour and ₡510 ($ 1.02) for an hour. Parking on weekends is free.

The fine, however, is steep: 10 times the value of one hour (₡5,100, or $10.20).
