Carnival Dances Its Way Back to Limón

Life Is a Carnival Again: Colorfully clad comparsas and thousands of onlookers took to the streets of the Caribbean port city of Limón last Saturday to celebrate the return of Carnival after a three-year hiatus. Floats, samba drums, vibrant outfits and jerk chicken were the order of the day, as Limón came alive in true Caribbean style. The event took place under the watchful eye of a large police presence this year, with baton-wielding mounted police turning out in large numbers. The Health Ministry’s fears that organizers had failed to clear the Limón streets of garbage in preparation for the large influx of visitors were unfounded. Visitors arriving early in anticipation of a midday start were surprised by desolate yet clean streets, with the parade not starting until 3 p.m.
