The Culture Ministry’s highest recognition for contributions to the country’s cultural arena was awarded last week to Virginia Pérez Ratton, acclaimed curator, art critic and founding director of the San José-based project Ars TEOR/éTica (TT, April 25, 2008).
The panel of judges awarded Pérez Ratton the prize for her “work as curator and promoter of contemporary art in Costa Rica as well as Central America and the Caribbean.” She was also recognized for her work in creating the ministry’s Contemporary Art and DesignMuseum and her contributions to preserving and promoting Central American music through the Papaya Music label, of which she is a co-founder. Her work as an artist, especially in the field of graphics, was also cited.
Pérez Ratton said she felt honored to have been so recognized, especially considering the careers of past Premio Magón recipients. “It is a stimulus to keep going, because I feel there is still much for me to do,” she said.
