The national surf circuit launches its 2026 season this weekend at Playa Cocles in Talamanca, drawing over 140 competitors to the Caribbean coast. From February 13 to 15, athletes will chase the first 1,500 ranking points in a competition that spans 19 categories, from juniors to open divisions.
Organized by the Costa Rican Surf Federation, the event marks a return to Playa Cocles after its absence last year. Surfers face consistent beach breaks here, where conditions often favor mid to high tides. The lineup includes top local talents, with results from early rounds helping shape the national team for upcoming international meets like the Pan American Surf Games and the Central American and Caribbean Games.
The full schedule covers five stops this year. After Cocles, action shifts to Santa Teresa de Cóbano on March 13-15, followed by Playa Guiones in Nosara from May 8-10, Dominical in Osa on June 12-14, and wraps with the grand final at Playa Hermosa in Jacó from July 10-12, offering 2,500 points. Competitors count their four best performances toward the overall standings.
Federation leaders aim to grow the circuit back to seven dates, a format seen in past seasons. This push would add two more venues, potentially another spot in Limón province—spanning north and south areas—and a southern site like Pavones on the Osa Peninsula. That region hosts a growing group of surfers drawn to its long point breaks.
To make this happen, the federation seeks extra funding to cover costs. Extra events mean longer travel for athletes, such as trips from Tamarindo to Limón, and more slots per competition to handle larger fields. President Roberto Vargas noted that stronger support would let the sport reach new communities and boost participation.
This season also brings wider access for fans. Grupo Repretel will air the finals live on Canal 6 every Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon, complete with champion interviews. Sponsors like Banco LAFISE, Corona Cero, and Suzuki back the effort, marking LAFISE’s fourth year as lead partner.
As Costa Rica builds toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, this circuit plays a key role in developing riders. Last year’s tour saw over 250 participants, and 2026 looks set to build on that momentum. With Playa Cocles ready to host under promising forecasts, the stage is set for strong starts and tight races.
