Plans for New Marriott in Guanacaste Expanded

To make room for a growing number of visitors in the northwestern province of Guanacaste,Marriott has announced that plans to build its fourth hotel in Costa Rica are being expanded.

The JW Marriott Hotel, which is planned at Hacienda Pinilla Beach Resort and Residential Community on the Pacific beachfront, will have 310 rooms now instead of the 180 previously announced (TT, Oct. 14, 2005), according to a statement from Marriott International.

The seventh Marriott Hotel in Latin America will open in 2008 under a franchise agreement between Marriott International, Inc. and Hotel Real de Pinilla, S.A., a subsidiary of Grupo Poma of El Salvador.

It will be located in the 4,000-acre resort and residential community development that also contains an existing 18-hole golf course, an equestrian center, tennis courts, villas and beach houses. Zurcher Architects is the project architect and Paul Duesing Partners is the interior designer.

“Costa Rica is a world-class leisure destination, especially for ecotourism, and attracts a diverse group of visitors,” said Ed Fuller, president and managing director of international lodging for Marriott International.

The resort will include 30 executivelevel guest rooms, three restaurants, a pool bar and grill, lobby lounge and bar, a health club and spa, several meeting rooms and a ballroom.

Marriott hotels in Costa Rica include the Costa Rica Marriott Hotel in Belén, northwest of San José, a Marriott Courtyard Hotel in Escazú, west of San José, and Los Sueños Marriott Ocean & Golf Resort in Playa Herradura, on the central Pacific coast.

Marriott International, Inc. has nearly 2,800 lodging properties in the United States and 67 other countries and territories.
