Nica-Tico Officials To Meet in March

Top officials from Costa Rica and Nicaragua – nations historically on frosty terms – will meet in Granada on March 13 to discuss tourism and the environment.

Despite their political differences, the two nations are trying to restart the Bilateral Commission, a 1990s project to create a permanent dialogue. The commission was suspended in 1997, during an escalation of tensions over Costa Rica’s right to navigate the San Juan River – an issue now before the International Court of Justice in the Hague (TT, Aug. 24, 2007).

Ministers from both countries will attend the meeting, as will mayors and lawmakers from the border region, according to a statement from Costa Rica’s Foreign Ministry.
