The Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ) has trotted out a new phone number for tipsters to call.
“(We) are making available to the entire population of the country the number 800- 8000-OIJ (800-8000-645) with which citizens can offer information about suspicious criminal activities in their community,” states a press release. “The complaints are taken in San José but will be immediately transferred to the corresponding office in any part of the country in order to begin an investigation.”
Court spokeswoman Andrea Marín said the new number was inaugurated on Monday and takes calls from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The hours may be expanded after the passage of a recent supplemental appropriations law for security.
The nation already has the 176 phone number for tips and reports to the National Police. However, The Tico Times called that number twice in the last two weeks during office hours and both times, no one answered.
