High Crime, Low Economy Hurting Arias’ Image

Frustrated by rising prices and crime, many Costa Ricans have lost confidence in President Oscar Arias.

Some 33 percent of Costa Ricans report a positive image of the president in July, down from 53 percent in January, according to a poll conducted by CID-Gallup for the daily La República. Arias is still the most popular of any president since 1980 after 27 months in office.

Discouraged by 14.2 percent inflation over the past year, nearly half of those surveyed said they expect their economic situation to deteriorate in the next year. Some 67 percent said crime has worsened.
