Second Victim Dies After Downtown Shooting

A second victim of the deadly shooting that took place Nov. 30 in front of the Social Protection Agency in downtown San José (TT, Dec. 2) died less than one day later from wounds he sustained during the incident, the daily Al Día reported. Luis Gilberto Monge, the 24-year-old brother of alleged shooter José Pablo Monge, 17, was shot when his younger brother reportedly drew a gun during a fight over money with the father of the two men, lottery vendor Carlos Monge.

Carlos’ co-worker and neighbor, Juan Pablo Cortés, was also killed instantly as a result of a shot to the throat, and three others, including Carlos, were injured but are in stable condition at Hospital México.

The shooting occurred at approximately 11 a.m. when José Monge approached his father demanding money, the daily reported. José Monge then reportedly drew a revolver and fired at the five men.

He was arrested after he allegedly fled the scene of the shooting with as much as ¢7 million ($14,250) of his father’s money.

“I’m torn to pieces. I can barely hold myself together,” Carlos Monge told the daily. “I love everyone equally but my son must be punished. What he did cannot be allowed.”
