Costa Rica Lifting of Covid-19 Restrictions For Some Businesses Begins Tomorrow

The Casa Presidencial of Costa Rica has released the following statement regarding the current Covid-19 restrictions, much to the applause of many private businesses;

For sports, cultural, academic and business activities, as well as for discos, dance halls and nightclubs, the capacity is increased to 100% when voluntarily requesting the QR code and to 50% without using the QR code.

As of this Tuesday, March 1, commercial premises and various activities will be able to expand up to 100% of their capacity with the voluntary verification of the QR code.

At the same time The National Chamber of Tourism (CANATUR) asked the authorities to exercise strict control and zero tolerance towards the clandestine parties that take place in the country.

“We demand that the authorities responsible for security and public order act under a policy of zero tolerance, and greater coordination to avoid, at all costs, this type of unfortunate situation that puts the image of the country very badly,”

CANATUR went on to say:

This type of illegal activity has been one of the biggest factors in the increase in infections at the most critical moments of the pandemic”

It would appear that authorities will take a two prong approach to lift restrictions on Covid -19 compliant businesses, after two years, and clamp down on illicit activities that act without restrictions and impact registered, tax paying businesses under legal limitations.

Costa Rica reports that over 80% of the population has received at least one vaccination.

During a recent vaccination campaign over the past two weeks, Costa Rica residents have lined up for hours at one of the 139 vaccination centers to get their additional shots.

Many of the people lining up to get their vaccinations are the same ones that lost their jobs due to Covid-19 restrictions. They just want to be safe for themselves, their families and get back to work.
