A group of police officers in the Southern Zone recently received training from Coast Guard experts on how to navigate at high sea, skills the Public Security Ministry hopes will help in catching the recent wave of aquatic drug smugglers.
These officers took a mid-level course on nautical techniques, oceanography basics and maritime and environmental law, according to a statement from the ministry.
Additionally, they received training in aquatic policing techniques that could help them act faster against drug trafficking and illegal fishing, the statement said.
Twenty officers took the four-month course, offered at the National Coast Guard Academy in Golfito.
