Alcaraz Wins First Paris Masters Title Ahead of ATP Finals

Carlos Alcaraz won his first Paris Masters title Sunday, beating American Ben Shelton 7-6 (5), 7-5 to claim his fifth trophy of the season and strengthen his late-season run ahead of the ATP Finals. The 23-year-old Spaniard needed one hour and 57 minutes to finish the match, adding a ninth Masters 1000 title to his career collection. The victory also reversed the outcome of their U.S. Open quarterfinal in September, when Shelton won in five sets.

Alcaraz heads toward the season-ending tournament in Turin with consecutive titles in Vienna and Paris. His latest win was the 29th tour-level title of his career, continuing a recovery from the right wrist injury that interrupted his season. Shelton made him work for it. The American created six break-point opportunities in the opening set but could not convert any of them. Alcaraz escaped a particularly difficult service game early on, saving four break points to keep Shelton from taking control.

The first set remained on serve through 12 games. In the tiebreaker, Alcaraz held his nerve and closed out the set after 65 minutes when Shelton sent a forehand long. The American broke through in the second set, but Alcaraz recovered the break and put the pressure back on his opponent. With Shelton serving at 5-6 to force another tiebreaker, the Spaniard earned two championship points.

He converted the second, finishing an exchange at the net with a backhand winner before celebrating with his team. “It is something I have been chasing for a long time,” Alcaraz said during his on-court interview. Paris had remained a gap in a Masters 1000 record that already included victories on clay and outdoor hard courts. He has now won seven of the nine tournaments in the category, with Canada and Shanghai the only titles missing.

The result also made him the third player to win a Masters 1000 title in five consecutive seasons since the series began in 1990, joining Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. For Alcaraz, the significance extends beyond another trophy. After returning from injury, he has won titles in Tokyo, Vienna and Paris, building a strong finish to a season disrupted by months away from competition.

His next stop is the ATP Finals, scheduled for November 15-22 in Turin, Italy. Alcaraz arrives with 19 wins from 21 matches since his return, giving him a strong recent record to carry into the season’s final ATP Tour event.
