Fútbol Friday: Navas still perfect, but rough week for Ticos abroad

Happy Fútbol Friday, when we highlight the week’s biggest Costa Rica soccer news.

Keylor Navas saw little action as PSG routed Club Brugge, 5-0, on Tuesday as part of UEFA Champions League play.

Here are all the goals Keylor Navas has allowed in the Champions League this year:

Get it? Get it?

As we covered yesterdayCosta Rica’s men’s national soccer team fell four spots to 47th worldwide in the latest FIFA rankings.

The move also dropped La Sele to fourth in CONCACAF (the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football), behind Mexico, the United States and Jamaica.

Major League Soccer playoffs are in full swing, and two Ticos had particularly rough nights.

Ronald Matarrita’s ill-timed challenge gifted Toronto a 90th-minute penalty kick (and victory) against his New York City FC.

Meanwhile, Giancarlo Gonzalez — and the entire Los Angeles Galaxy back line — struggled in a 5-3 defeat against rivals Los Angeles FC on Thursday night.

None of the four semifinalists have a Tico on their roster.

Saprissa fell, 2-0, to Olimpia (Honduras) on Thursday night in the first leg of the CONCACAF League semifinals.

The Costa Rican club will host Olimpia in the return leg next week.

Things aren’t going too well for Saprissa in the domestic league, either — they’re well behind rivals Alajuelense, which have set a Costa Rican record for victories away from home.
