Vice President Epsy Campbell out of hospital following health scare

Vice President Epsy Campbell was treated Monday at Calderón Guardia Hospital in San José after presenting with elevated blood pressure.

Campbell said Monday afternoon that her condition was “stable” and later announced she had checked out of the public hospital.

“Dear friends: This afternoon I entered the Calderón Guardia Hospital for medical exams for presenting with high blood pressure,” Vice President Campbell tweeted. “I am in stable condition. I appreciate the attention of the medical team and all your good wishes for a speedy recovery.”

The vice president later said she had left the hospital and was “feeling good.”

“I just left Calderón Guardia Hospital,” she wrote Monday evening. “I thank again the medical team and all those who have sent me their good wishes for a speedy recovery. I’m feeling good, and I send you a huge hug.”

Campbell, 56, has been the First Vice President of Costa Rica since May 2018. She is the country’s first female vice president of African descent.

She was Costa Rica’s presidente en ejercicio, or acting president, on Monday because President Carlos Alvarado was conducting government business in Mexico.
