Chinchilla voids diplomatic posts

On Tuesday, President Laura Chinchilla announced she will cancel 27 diplomatic appointments, after the Public Ethics Attorney’s Office opened an investigation against her Foreign Minister René Castro.

At a press conference, Chinchilla said she made the decision seeking to eliminate any suspicious appointment by Castro.

Chinchilla’s government has been under public scrutiny in the last two weeks, after an investigation by the daily La Nación revealed how Castro distributed a large number of diplomatic posts among members of the ruling National Liberation Party (TT, June 21).

As a result, the government ethics office opened an investigation last Friday in order to determine if a crime has been committed as a result of Castro’s decisions. Castro sent a brief press statement on Tuesday, saying he is willing provide all explanations requested.
