Congressman Claudio Monge announced this week that he will be the presidential candidate for the Citizens Action Party (PAC) in the 2014 presidential election.
The 58-year-old PAC deputy is the party’s leader in environmental and poverty issues in the Legislative Assembly. On Monday, Monge announced that he will be running for president whether he has his alliance’s support or not.
“I have thought about this for years and it has been a tough decision,” Monge told the daily La Nación.
Some of the party’s main political figures stated Monge’s presidential aspirations seemed premature. PAC President Elizabeth Fonseca did not hide her favoritism for PAC member Luis Guillermo Solís as a future candidate.
