Global implant scare reaches Costa Rica

Officials at Costa Rica’s Social Security System (Caja) plan to do a complete assessment of every patient who received PIP breast implants between 2006 and 2010, the Caja announced through its twitter account Thursday afternoon.

The products from the French firm PIP were found to contain industrial rather than medical quality silicone, and have led to a worldwide scare.

The silicone used in the implants makes them a risk to rupture and poses a major threat to patients.

Patients with the faulty implants will receive “specialized and individualized attention” to make sure implants are replaced with those recommended by medical professionals.

Pressure is mounting on the founder of the company that made the potentially risky breast implants fitted to tens of thousands. Global police agency Interpol said that a “red notice” it issued seeking the arrest of Frenchman Jean-Claude Mas in Costa Rica had nothing to do with his role at PIP.
