Heavy rains hit Costa Rica: two dead, one missing; another tropical wave expected to hit tomorrow, red alerts issued

Two people died and one is missing after a tropical wave and heavy rains swept through Costa Rica late this week.

The AFP reported that two women died on Friday after a tree fell on their house in Sarapiquí. The Red Cross said that three others were injured after heavy rains and winds caused the tree to fall.

Josh Byrne, 30, has been missing after the car he was traveling in was swept away by floodwaters. Josh was honeymooning in Costa Rica with his wife, Bianca, when they were caught in a flash flood while crossing a bridge near Playa Dominicalito.

Bianca was able to swim to safety after their car was swept away but Josh is still missing.

The National Meteorological Institute said another tropical wave is expected to hit early on Sunday. The CNE has issued red alerts for the districts of Cóbano, Paquera and Lepanto.

A yellow alert has been issued for the cantons of Santa Cruz, Nicoya, Hojancha, Nandayure Esparza and the districts of Barranca, central Puntarenas, El Roble and Pithaya. The Southern Pacific and Central Pacific regions are also under a yellow alert.

Northern Costa Rica, Sarapiquí and the Central Valley are under a green alert.

Shelters to help families displaces by heavy rains have also been set up throughout the country.

In Puntarenas, there are shelters in Lepanto, Osa, Bahia Ballena, Quepos and Paquera. Guanacaste has shelters in the district of 27 de abril and Puerto Carrillo.

San José has one shelter in Desamparados, in the sector of San Juan de Dios.
