Who’s taking the reins in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica’s football authorities established a new technical commission Tuesday to choose the country’s next head coach for the Men’s National Team, in hopes of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Costa Rican Football Federation President Rodolfo Villalobos swore in the commission members, made up of former players and headed by former La Sele goalie Eric Lonis.

“We’re on the verge of making decisions that give hope to a whole country, looking to qualify for a World Cup in an exotic place, [a tournament] where we should be,” Lonis told journalists.

Costa Rica turned in a disappointing performance in this year’s World Cup, exiting the tournament in the group round after a series of lackluster performances. Head coach Oscar “Machillo” Ramírez was dismissed shortly thereafter.
