What to do in Costa Rica in May and June

With the International Arts Festival (FIA) just behind us, it’s time to keep celebrating Costa Rican culture in all of its expressions. On the docket for the coming months are concerts, festivals and more. Here’s a partial guide.

May 5, Paseo de los Estudiantes, Barrio Chino, San José: Visitors to the International Tamal Festival can sample tamales from various locations in Central and South America. Exhibits, stands, conferences and workshops about tamales with the goal of conserving the region’s culinary heritage. Entry is free. Info: 4001-6590 or 6198-6259.

May 5, Anfiteatro Coca Cola, La Guácima, Alajuela: The renowned Mexican ranchera singer Alejandro Fernández will delight fans at Parque Viva. Tickets at www.boleteria.cr, ₡25,500 ($45) to ₡80,000 ($142).

May 12–13, Teatro Nacional, San José: The National Theater will offer free guided tours throughout the theater, open to the public, 9 am-5 pm. Info: www.teatronacional.go.cr, 2010-1100.

May 17, Anfiteatro Municipal, Cartago: If you’re a fan of Dragon Ball Z, this concert by the Youth Orchestra Chamber of Costa Rica, Banda Zukia and Hyper Foofie is for you. 7 pm. ₡8,000 ($14) to ₡14,000 ($24). Info: zukiacr2@gmail.com.

May 20, Parque de Sarchí, Alajuela: Enjoy films and fresh air at the Movie in the Park event in the central park of Sarchí, renowned for its lovely sculpture gardens. Free. 7 pm. Also offered on June 24.

June 2, Amón Solar, Barrio Amón, San José: The first-ever Victoria Fest will feature national and international bands, artwork, photography and short films. ₡5,000 ($10). 5 pm. Info: victoriafestcr@outlook.com.

June 30, Centro de Eventos Pedregal, Heredia: Ozuna performs for the first time in Costa Rica. Tickets at www.specialticket.net from ₡26,500 ($47) to ₡56,500 ($100).
