Los Tigres, of Mexico, defeated Costa Rica’s Club Sport Herediano 3-1 Tuesday night to advance to the quarterfinals of this year’s CONCACAF Champions League.
Enner Valencia of Ecuador scored for Los Tigres in the 49th minute after controlling a long pass and firing off a powerful shot. Heredia’s Jairo Arrieta evened the score in the 78th, but Valencia scored again just a minute later to bring the score to 2-1.
Argentinean player Ismael Sosa scored the final goal in the 90th minute, securing Los Tigres’ slot in the quarters, where the team will face off against Canada’s Toronto FC.
Last night’s match at the Universitario Stadium in Monterrey, Mexico, followed a dramatic face-off in Costa Rica last week in which Heredia tied the game by scoring in the 90th and 92nd minute.
Another Costa Rican club, Deportivo Saprissa, will play Club América tonight at 10 pm, but faces an uphill battle after losing the first of its two matches 1-5 last week.
