Heredia ties Mexico’s Tigres in dramatic Champions match

Costa Rica’s Club Sport Herediano made jaws drop when, after reaching the 90th minute down 0-2, it managed to pull off a 2-2 draw with Mexico’s Tigres club on Tuesday during the round of 16 of the CONCACAF 2018 Champions League.

The Mexican team reached its two-goal lead thanks to defender Francisco Meza, who scored in the 15th minute, and Lucas Zelarayán at the 59-minute mark.

However, a successful penalty shot by Yendrick Ruíz revived the home team in the 90th, and two minutes later, in extra time, Jairo Arrieta headed a free kick home to tie the game.

The Mexican champion, which visited San José without some of its stars, such as André-Pierre Gignac, still looks strong to advance to the quarterfinals: after a strong showing in San José, it is expected to have the upper hand when the teams face off in their second game on Tuesday, Feb. 27.

Costa Rica’s Saprissa club will face off against Club América tonight at 8 pm at Saprissa Stadium in Tibás.
