COSTA RICA'S LEADING ENGLISH LANGUAGE NEWSPAPER

Horsing around

It’s time for the Tope Nacional – the tradition that, every Dec. 26, turns San José  into the gathering place for the best horses and riders from around the country.

The horses are always wearing their best attire for the occasion as well as showing off their groomed, braided hair. However, with presidential and legislative elections coming up in February, the biggest displays of the day will likely belong to the political candidates who turn out to make an impression on the crowd.

Thousands of riders and horses, and hundreds of thousands of spectators, are expected for the annual parade down Paseo Colón and Avenida Segunda in the heart of the capital.
