Earthquakes continue to rock Nicaragua’s Pacific coast

Monday morning at 9:12 a.m., a magnitude-5.0 earthquake shook Nicaragua’s Pacific coast, according to the U.S. Geological Survey’s website. There were no reports of injuries or damages.

Today’s temblor originated in the same location as the magnitude-6.5 earthquake that rocked the Central American country at 11:34 a.m. on Saturday morning. Residents in Costa Rica, Honduras and El Salvador also felt the strong quake that originated 31 miles off Nicaragua’s Pacific coast, reported Global Post and The Associated Press.

Nicaraguan authorities declared a tsunami alert as a precaution following Saturday’s quake, but the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration did not expect a “destructive Pacific-wide tsunami,” according to Reuters. Authorities attributed one death from a heart attack and minor damages to some public buildings to Saturday’s temblor.

Today’s quake was the largest of 35 smaller aftershocks following Saturday’s seismic activity, reported the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies, according to the Nicaragua Dispatch.
