Green and Leatherback Turtles Hatch on Costa Rica’s Moín Beach

Every year, Costa Rica’s stunning beaches witness one of our countries and nature’s most remarkable spectacles – sea turtles emerging from the sea to nest or, in the case of hatchlings, embarking on their first journey to the ocean. Recently, thanks to reader Charlene Gruar, we were lucky enough to receive some incredible photos of baby green and leatherback turtles on the beach at Moín, located on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. These awe-inspiring images capture the essence of Costa Rica’s role in global marine conservation efforts.

Moín beach is a haven for sea turtles, especially for green and leatherback turtles, two species known for nesting along Costa Rica’s shores. Leatherback turtles, the largest of all sea turtles, can grow up to seven feet long and are critically endangered. Meanwhile, green turtles, named for the greenish color of their body fat, are also considered endangered due to threats like habitat destruction and poaching.

The hatching of baby turtles marks the beginning of a perilous journey as they scramble across the sand to reach the safety of the ocean. Many of them face natural predators or human-related challenges. Costa Rica’s commitment to protecting these turtles, through programs and conservation efforts, plays a vital role in ensuring these species continue to thrive.

As we celebrate these precious moments, let’s remember the importance of ongoing efforts to protect these creatures and the natural habitats that support them. Thank you again, Charlene, for sharing this beautiful moment with us.
