Costa Rican police seize 300 kilos of cocaine

In the early-morning hours of Wednesday, Costa Rican Drug Control Police (PCD) agents discovered 300 kilograms of cocaine hidden in the floor of a Guatemalan semi-trailer attempting to exit the country at the northern border facilities of Peñas Blancas.

The semi was driven by a Guatemalan man with the last name Castellanos, 36, who entered the country on July 5.

The drugs were covered with chlorine tablets for swimming pools, which police said was an attempt to fool drug-sniffing dogs from the Canine Unit, according to a PCD report.

The man was arrested and taken to the Prosecutor’s Office in Liberia, Guanacaste.

Records from the Public Security Ministry indicate that in 2013 police officers have seized 7.3 tons of cocaine, 49,231 doses of crack and 1,600 kilograms of marijuana.
